For people who have Google Earth (GE) installed on their computer, I have assembled some paths, placemarks and overlays for people to download and use with GE.
GE is a program that can be used to explore the world in 3D, a great big digital map. Although the whole world is not yet fully mapped with high definition imagery, many major cities, natural and man made wonders are and this program can be downloaded for free from http://earth.google.com/ . A word of warning though! You need to have a fairly high spec PC AND a Broad-Band internet connection, as the images are generated on the 'fly', that is the section of the world you are viewing is downloaded onto your computer and the images are cached to the memory, these images are lost when you shut down your PC.
WARNING! Google Earth is not a serious navigation program, just a fun way to look at the world, never attempt to go out in mountainous areas unless you are equipped with the correct clothing, footwear, maps, compass and the skill to use them.
If you have Google Earth (GE) installed on your PC then the following items can be downloaded to your PC, to do this just click on the path, placemark or overlay of your choice. A download box will appear and you should save this to a folder that you can find again easily. Once the item is downloaded, press the 'Run' button, this will then start GE and take you to the place the item is relevent to.
There will be three types of files to download:
1. Placemarks- these take you to a specific location in the world.
2 Path- this will display a line path representing a walking route.
3 Overlay- generally these are either enhanced aerial photos or maps.
Below is a screenshot showing the various controls on GE.
